Know what you're taking on

Every tour we run carries an activity level, because a leisurely morning in an art gallery asks something very different of you from a hilltop trek or a steep cobbled medieval street. The rating takes account of the terrain, the distance walked each day, the number of hotel changes, how long each day runs and how much of it is spent travelling between sites.

All our tours involve some walking, on inclines, varied ground and up and down steps. We move at a considered pace and allow time to pause, look and talk, but a basic level of mobility makes the difference between managing a day and enjoying it.

You don't just see a site like this — you learn to read it. Once you know where to look, every broken wall is still telling you something.

Activity Levels: Your Questions Answered

Light suits most people in reasonable health, with walking on well-maintained paths and shorter travelling days. Moderate asks for a reasonable level of fitness, with varied terrain, some steeper ground and longer days. Active asks for a good level of fitness and can involve difficult terrain, higher altitude and long days.

The terrain and daily walking distance, the number of hotel changes, how long the days run and how much time is spent travelling between sites. It is the whole shape of the week rather than any single walk.

No. Every tour involves some walking, because the sites, gardens and buildings we visit have to be reached and walked around. The light tours keep it to well-made paths and modest distances.

Get in touch. Fitness varies, and so does how you feel about steps, heat, uneven ground or being on your feet for long stretches. It is worth a conversation before you book rather than a guess.

Usually, yes. Your Tour Manager can often arrange for you to sit out a more demanding visit, though this varies by itinerary and it is best to ask in advance rather than on the day.
