Historic Houses & Stately Homes Tours

Castles, palaces and abbeys are buildings of power and faith, raised for defence, rule or worship, and mostly medieval or earlier. Historic houses and stately homes came later, built for comfort and display, and are as much about interiors, furniture and collections as about the architecture.

At many of the properties we visit we are guided by people who know these houses and their collections inside out, and knowing who built a house, what it cost them and what they were trying to prove is what turns a tour of rooms into something you remember. 

Many are, but a tour reaches them differently. Visits are arranged and timed to avoid the worst of the crowds, the specialist travelling with you fills in what the room guide leaves out, and several itineraries take in lesser-known houses that most visitors never think to look for. 

Interiors are the point on the house tours, and access varies by property. Castles and abbeys are often part ruin and part standing building, so expect a mix of roofed rooms and open walls, which is usually the more interesting combination. 

A good deal, and much of it on your feet indoors. Expect spiral stairs, cobbles, gravel, uneven floors and steep approaches, since many of these buildings were deliberately sited somewhere difficult to reach and few have lifts. Each itinerary sets out what to expect before you book. 

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Shared interest naturally leads to easy conversation, and friendships formed on tour often outlast it. 

Spring through autumn, when houses and estates are open, and their gardens are worth the extra hour. Ruined castles and abbeys are open year-round and often at their most atmospheric out of season, when you may have them largely to yourself.
