The people who make the difference

The single thing that separates one of our tours from a well-planned holiday is who you travel with. Our experts are archaeologists, Egyptologists, horticulturalists, historians, garden designers, broadcasters and writers, and they travel with you rather than meeting you at the gate. They put sites into their cultural context, share the detail you would otherwise walk past, and answer the questions that occur to you halfway through the afternoon.

Their expertise runs deeper than a script. Many research, excavate or work in the places you are visiting, and several have written the books on them.

You don't just see a site like this — you learn to read it. Once you know where to look, every broken wall is still telling you something.

Meet Your Experts: Your Questions Answered

A Tour Manager who looks after the practical running of the week, and a specialist in the subject of the tour. On some itineraries these are the same person, and on others they are two.

Genuine subject expertise rather than general guiding. Depending on the tour, that means archaeologists and Egyptologists, horticulturalists and garden designers, historians, and specialists in art and architecture, along with local guides in particular destinations.

Yes, on the tours they lead. They travel with the group throughout rather than appearing for a session and leaving, which is why the conversation carries on between sites and over meals.

Each departure lists who is travelling with it where that has been confirmed. Some tours are also accompanied by a guest lecturer or a well-known specialist for all or part of the itinerary.

Not at all. Our experts are used to groups that range from complete beginners to people who have studied the subject for years, and they pitch things to the group in front of them. Questions are always welcome.
